A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles - Book Review
Count Rostov is placed under house arrest in a luxury hotel during the 1917 Bolshevik revolution, in Moscow in the midst of the Soviet Union. His crime is being an aristocrat and deemed a man of interest. The story follows his adventures throughout the years in the Hotel Metropol.
The writing is some of the best I have ever read in a contemporary novel. The historical aspect is interesting as it discusses Soviet Russia from a Count's perspective. It weaves a lot of the communist issues that most people in Russia faced in a subtle way, giving you a perspective into that time.
The setting of the story is intriguing and not at all basic. It didn't have a formulaic layout like modern novels do, which I appreciated. It has an element of whimsy to it, making it not at all serious but actually fun and unpredictable.
